FAST FOODS AND YOU

Did you know processed foods are chemically made to make us crave them? This not only increases our dependency on these seemingly delicious treats, but, often times, we become the victims of overindulgence. The secret weapon to chemically made foods lies in the aroma. The aroma can be responsible for as much as 90% of flavor! This is why foods that are not good for us sometimes taste better than the ones that are.
The popular brand name products we know and over-eat have distinct personalities, the majority of which are created by the International Flavors and Fragrances. This includes products from “all-natural” juices, cereals, crackers and potato chips to dishwashing detergent, furniture polish and floor wax. According to Ron Lagerquist, author of Fasting to Freedom,
“The science behind the scent of your underarm deodorant is basically the same one that puts the flavor in your pop tarts. Don’t be fooled by the label ‘natural flavor.’ There is little or no difference between what is in artificial flavor and natural flavor; both are man-made additives.”
Since walking around with nose plugs is not an actual option, here are a few tips that may help in the daily fight against these deceptive treats:
1.) Follow the five ingredient rule: More than 5 ingredients is a RED flag for processed and manufactured foods. Often times, the less, more pronounceable ingredients, the better. So try and eat foods that are closest to its original form.
2.) Aim for color: “Anthocyanins that turn blueberries blue can also keep your mind sharp, the lycopene that turns watermelon and tomatoes red may also help protect against prostate and breast cancers, and the beta carotene that makes carrots and sweet potatoes orange can help keep your bones strong, your eyes healthy and boost your immune system.” – Eating Well
3.) Have healthy snacks close near by: Healthy snacks are one way to avoid innutritious treats. Some of my favorites include nuts and dried fruits. I also love RXBars and That’s It Bars. Both can be found at Lucky’s Market and other health food stores.
